Chapter Nine
âWas there no closer stop?â Liam complained. âI bet weâre still a hundred miles away.â
âYou know portals canât always be precise,â Tate said. She flicked a glance in my direction. âHow are you feeling?â
I was bent over, clutching my stomach. âI think breakfast will stay where it belongs.â Emilâs quick portal was still better than a long car journey. Short-term pain for long-term gain.
Liam put his hands on his hips and surveyed the area. âI really wish I could create portals.â
âAnother reason we need Evadne,â Leto said.
âHer portals arenât as good as Emilâs,â Saxon said. âRemember that time you ended up in Knoxville and the rest of us went to Miami?â
Tate laughed. âDude, that was totally on purpose.â
âWe should start walking,â Saxon said. âThe longer we stand here complaining, the more time Supai has to carry out his plan.â
One thought of the desperate children and my feet were spurred into action. After half an hour of dusty paths, Saxon slowed to a halt. âAre we sure this is the right way?â
I understood his concern. There seemed to be bleak desert--nothing but landscape between us and the horizon. Not even a remote highway was visible from where we stood.
Leto sniffed the air. âIâm not too much help in a place like this. I donât recognize any of the smells.â
âI donât either, but I feel confident itâs the right way,â Liam insisted. He shaded his brow and pointed. âLook. Thereâs a sign of life.â
I peered into the distance to see an enormous tree towering over the barren land. âA tree? Thatâs your sign of life?â
âThatâs not just any tree,â Liam said. âItâs so massive that we can see it from here. I bet itâs sacred, which means thereâs likely civilization ahead.â
Tate shrugged. âItâs not a bad theory.â
âShould I fly ahead and take a look?â Saxon asked.
âThereâs no point,â Leto said. âWeâre all going in the same direction.â
The closer we got to the tree, the more its monstrous size became apparent. It was at least seventy feet high and thirty feet around with thick, twisting branches that seemed to stretch and reach toward unseen objects.
âIt reminds me of Medusaâs head,â I said.
Leto offered a good-natured smile. âYes, maybe sheâs buried here, lying in wait for travelers, and a giant Gorgon will break out of the ground and turn us all to stone.â
âI kind of hope she does,â Liam said. âI always thought she was rather attractive and Iâm due for a new lady friend.â
âTypical Liam. Any port in a storm,â Tate said.
I snorted. âMore like any mirage in a desert.â
The hot desert air dropped about ten degrees as we approached the tree. It was impossible to walk past without stopping to admire its canopy of branches and massive trunk. Liam jumped up and gripped one of the branches, swinging like a monkey.
âWe donât have time to play,â Saxon said. âLetâs keep moving.â
âCome on, you old curmudgeon. We canât pass by a tree like this and not climb it. Itâs unnatural.â Liam pulled himself upright onto the low branch and continued to climb.
